Modern Masters showcases the great filmmakers who are making their best work right now.

Schedule of films:

  • January 1 and 7: My Journey Through Frenche Cinema - A can’t-miss event for franco-cinephiles is celebrated filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier’s personal cinema memoir, which reveals the essential films, filmmakers, and icons of France’s cinematic heritage. Featuring deep dives into the work of Jean Gabin, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jacques Becker, and many more.
  • February 18: AFERIM! - Director Radu Jude shines as the newest bright light of Romanian film. This unbelievable period piece illuminating Romania’s trafficking of Romani gypsies follows the journey of father and son on the hunt for an escaped slave.
  • February 21: Scarred Hearts - Pre-war medicine, European identity politics, and dark comedy meet in Radu Jude’s latest film, a totally unconventional biopic of Romanian Jewish writer Max Blecher, depicting the period of his life spent in a hospital being treated for his debilitating bone tuberculosis. Certain to be one of our favorite new films of the year.
