Austin Film Society presents Lates

eventdetail

Lates is the new cult film canon, presented on late nights on weekends.

Schedule:

  • March 30-April 1: Legend Of The Mountain - In this newly restored classic from director King Hu, we are swept up in a staggeringly gorgeous legend of ancient ghosts and warring spirits. Full of King Hu’s gravity- and reality-bending touches, this epic demands to be seen on the big screen.
  • April 6-8: D.O.A: A Rite Of Passage - Newly restored. This is a completely essential low-fi documentary chronicling the Sex Pistols ill-fated – and let’s face it, ill-conceived, 1978 tour of the American South. Whether you care about the bands depicted here (which include the Clash and Generation X), this is an amazing sociological document of cultures in collision.
  • April 13, 14, and 16: Deep Red - Dario Argento’s newly restored symphony of horror may surprise those expecting a gore-fest. Equal parts screwball mystery and metaphysical puzzle, it is truly terrifying, but this epochal giallo is also a cinephile’s delight. Score by Ennio Morricone.
  • April 20, 21 and 23: Barbarella - In this ludicrous and colorful outer space comedy adventure based on an underground comic book, Jane Fonda manages to invest her character, a 41st Century space voyager, with nuance and implied social commentary that transcends the material.
