Words of Hope, presented by Austin Subaru, is Caritas of Austin’s largest annual fundraising event featuring a prominent figure whose story reflects Caritas’ mission and work. Previous Words of Hope speakers include radio personality Bobby Bones and U.S. Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell.

This year’s featured speaker is Emmitt Smith, who first rose to prominence via an illustrious football career, which included three Super Bowl championships as a member of the Dallas Cowboys and induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Smith is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, and his charm and charisma made him one of the sports world’s most popular personalities during his playing career. Smith is now a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, and he is passionate about sharing his personal and professional stories across the country.

Also featured in the evening program will be the presentation of the prestigious Harvey Penick Award to Lynn and Tom Meredith. Each year, the Harvey Penick Award for Excellence in the Game of Life is presented to a prominent leader whose life emulates that of the first recipient, golf legend, Harvey Penick. Previous honorees include Lady Bird Johnson, Edith and Darrell Royal, Ben Crenshaw, Susan and Michael Dell, Teresa and Joe Long, Susan and Gary Farmer, and Tomi and Pete Winstead.

All proceeds from the evening go to Caritas of Austin’s programs, which assist people who do not have a stable place to call home.
