The historic Hyde Park neighborhood, Austin’s first suburb, will itself be of interest to many. Now an Austin showplace, Hyde Park was a declining central-city neighborhood in the early 1970s when neighbors, alarmed at the destruction of old houses to make room for student apartments, formed the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association to try to save the old houses and the feel of an old fashioned residential neighborhood. They succeeded, and today Hyde Parkers enjoy a thriving multi-generational, multi-ethnic, multi-income level community. The neighborhood was reinvented along with the houses, making it a real and most rewarding place to live.
All seven restored houses are making their first appearance on this guided tour, which has the theme, ‘Reinvented, Rewarding, and Real.’ An overview of the homes appears at www.hydeparkhomestour.org.
