Matt's Famous El Rancho
Ask most Austinites who have lived here longer than two years where their favorite Mexican food is, and most will say Matt's Famous El Rancho. (Most just call it Matt's El Rancho, though.) Over the 40-plus years it has been a part of South Austin, the patrons have become downright protective of this, their Mexican heart. The super-sized menu is crammed full with all the cheesy, saucy dishes you'd expect along with a few welcome newcomers. Without hesitation, you have to start with the Bob Armstrong Dip, the signature spicy guacamole and chili con queso concoction. You won't be disappointed by the enchiladas and burritos, but your heart will sing with the flavors of the sizzling fajitas. Top it off with one of the bar's signature margaritas or Matt's Knockout Martini while sitting out on the hacienda-style patio, and pretty soon, you'll be a believer as well.
