The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary may not be as expansive and diverse as other big city zoos, but that is because it devotes most of its time and effort to rescuing and rehabilitating animals of all species. Unlike many other U.S. zoos, the Austin Zoo is located outside of town in the middle of the Hill Country away from city traffic. The kids will love it just as much, and you're free to bring your own picnic to relax amongst the collection of exotic animals.
