Neill-Cochran House Museum

The beautiful Greek-styled home that seems out of place on San Gabriel Street is a historical museum cared for today by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Texas. (Phew!) The house was built originally for an over-zealous couple that couldn't afford the exorbitant construction costs, and soon the Texas Asylum for the Blind moved in while the State finished the job. The House was later transformed into a hospital following the Civil War; but when the U.S. government failed to pay the mortgage, a judge in town bought the house for himself. Through it all, the Neill-Cochran House has stood amazingly well preserved and remains one of Austin's truly historic residences.

Docents will glady guide you on a tour around the house that will take approximately one hour. Drop-ins are welcome during regular visiting hours; no appointment is necessary for small groups.
