Hosted by local comic Seth Cockfield, Cherrywood's (free!) open mic kicks off at 10 pm every Tuesday and usually features between 15 and 20 stand up sets. If you're looking to get on the list, show up by 9:45 to sign up. We suggest checking out Cherrywood's exceptional beer list (and maybe grabbing a cookie or two) beforehand.
To snag a spot on The Velv's open mic lineup, you'll have to visit their site and submit -- and there's no guarantee you'll make it onto the list of 33 comics who get between 3 and 10 minutes on the legendary Sixth Street stage every Thursday. The show starts at 9:30 and usually wraps up after midnight, and it's well worth it to stick around to see Austin's best comics testing out new material.
Every Friday at 10 pm, Live at ColdTowne features 10 comics and, unlike most open mics, includes a headlining act. Hosted by Funniest Person in Austin runner-up Ramin Nazer, Live at ColdTowne is a great place to see polished bits and brand new material alike.
Block Party, The New Movement's free, anything-goes open mic, isn't strictly for stand ups -- they encourage sketch acts, improv, music, even food fights and prank calls, as long as it's under 5 minutes. Sign up before 9:30 on Thursdays and, as always, BYOB.
Sign up on Cap City's site for a spot at Austin's biggest comedy club (but don't worry about the huge room - Sunday's open mic takes place on the bar stage). Bonus: Part of the proceeds go to Austin's Children Shelter.
