The City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division is committed to enhancing the urban scenery of Austin, thanks mostly to its Art in Public Places (AIPP) program. Now the city wants to help add a little flair to Austin’s most visited location, the airport.

AIPP is sending out a national call to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to design and fabricate artwork for the Terminal East Infill Project at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The project is looking to add an additional 55,000 square feet to the east ticket lobby, and AIPP wants to devote some of this space to public art.

As long as an artist isn’t already under contract with the City of Austin, they can submit an application by 5 p.m. on June 26 via an online application system. If you’re a local artist looking to learn more about the project and how to apply, AIPP will host an information session at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17, which will also be broadcast live as an interactive webinar. AIPP will also be available during their office hours for assistance.

The project is open to a wide range of ideas for the final art piece, which can either be an interior or exterior piece that is on or close to the site. Technology-based work is strongly encouraged for interested artists.

Once selected, the artist or team will work closely in conjunction with the East Terminal design team to develop an inclusive design that works with the overall project. And since this project is on a fast track for completion, artists should be ready to complete designs by December 2013.
