From the moment it was announced, the potential shuttering of Auditorium Shores for major renovations was riddled with controversy. Dog owners were upset that the new redesign (funded in large part by C3 Presents) eliminated a large swath of the off-leash dog park. Promoters of the dozens of annual events held in the public park voiced their frustration at being forced to relocate for the year. But despite a handful of citizen-led, contentious hearings at City Council meetings, members of the Council voted 7-0 on December 12, 2013, to move forward with the $3.5 million renovation.
In the wake of Auditorium Shores closing, Austin's Parks and Recreation Department offered its official suggestions for moving key events such as SXSW shows, the Austin American-Statesman Cap 10K and Fun Fun Fest to new spaces. While the majority of the suggestions are for nearby Butler Park and the Palmer Events Center, some of the suggest new locations offered are for farther locales, including Circuit of the Americas and Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
