If you felt a collective, citywide shudder earlier this week, it wasn't from the polar vortex blanketing Austin. No, it was the realization that SXSW is less than two months away. Naturally, we had to mark this occasion with a preview of our can't-miss SXSW acts. Most of the names were just released, so take a look and start planning your schedule.

So what else caught our attention this week?

1. Red McCombs said some pretty weird things about UT's new football coach, Charlie Strong. Though he later apologized, saying his comments were not racially motivated, it didn't stop the booster from facing intense criticism for his words.

2. For this month's "Where to Eat" column, we reached out to Austin's culinary superstars to ask them: What are some of your favorite unexpected menu items?

3. Surprising news about Austin favorite Waterloo Ice House.

4. Two Austin beer bars were named best in the country. We tell you which (and name a whole bunch that should have made the list, too).

5. We pick 12 can't-miss performers for SXSW 2014, culled from their third wave of released names.
