The Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary was burglarized overnight, according to the zoo's director.
Austin Zoo Director Patti Clark says burglars ransacked the zoo's administrative offices and gift shop and stole security cameras, radios, charging stations, a computer and dart guns. Clark said the burglars also demolished furniture, pried open filing cabinets and took the zoo's ATM and safe. It is projected that the thieves made off with around $30,000 in cash and items.
Clark said the Austin Zoo has a fence around the property, but it looks like the burglars jumped the fence and pried the door open. No windows were broken. Two staff members were on the grounds, but they were sleeping at the time of the burglary.
The Austin Zoo recently acquired two North American black bear cubs, and staff was preparing for bigger than normal holiday crowds coming to see the new additions.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
