Everywhere you look in Austin, there are dogs lounging on patios, cats looking longingly out windows, horses parked outside dive bars, and even the occasional pig sighting. So it should come as no surprise that we rank in the top 20 for Best Cities for Pet Lovers.

A recent survey released by WalletHub compares the animal-friendliness of the 100 largest U.S. cities across 16 key metrics, such as the most dog parks per capita, minimum pet-care provider rate per visit, and the number of pet businesses per capita.

Coming in at No. 16 on the list, Austin also ranked in the top five for most pet-friendly restaurants per capita. And within the top 16 on the overall list, our fair city scored highest in the Outdoor Environment and Amusement category. With more than 60 pet-friendly hotels, 200-plus dog-friendly restaurants and the highest number of vets per capita in the state, it’s clear to see that our domestic companions are a huge part of the Austin lifestyle.

The top three cities on the list for best cities for pet lovers are Cincinnati, Ohio; St. Louis, Missouri; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. The worst three cities ranked as Santa Ana, California; New York, New York; and Newark, New Jersey.
