KVUE -- Those planning to go to parties and bars in Austin this New Year's Eve will have a safe and free way of getting home.

On Thursday the Austin Police Department and Capital Metro announced a joint initiative to help keep roads safe on New Year's Eve.

All Capital Metro services will be free starting at 6 p.m. Monday.

“Capital Metro is a safe, hassle-free alternative to driving your car downtown, especially on New Year’s Eve,” said Capital Metro President and CEO Linda S. Watson. “We’re pleased to be able to expand a partnership we began last year with the Austin Police Department to encourage people to ride public transit on New Year’s Eve.”

Cap Metro's Night Owl bus will also be running Monday night. Five buses will run to and from 6th Street and Congress, as well as neighborhoods around town, from midnight to 3 a.m. Those buses will run every 30 minutes.

“The Austin Police Department is excited about partnering with Capital Metro again this year,” said Police Chief Art Acevedo. “Public transit is another great option to make sure folks are getting home safely this New Year’s Eve instead of getting behind the wheel drunk and driving. Collectively, our number one goal is to make sure everyone rings in the New Year safely.”
