More than a few Texans had quite the year in 2013. A score of actors, musicians, politicians, entrepreneurs and creatives are moving into 2014 with something to savor.

Here's our list of nine Texans who had a great year in 2013.

Beyoncé — Because, duh. This Houston native caused quite a frenzy in the music industry a few weeks ago with the release of her supersecret, self-titled album, Beyoncé. Not only is the new album being hailed by critics and fans alike as a work of art, Vulture also notes that “Beyoncé has been available for barely two weeks, and it's already the year's twelfth best-selling album.” Way to represent H-Town, Queen Bey!

Wendy Davis — Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you’ve likely heard of Wendy Davis. The Fort Worth Democrat caused a roaring stir at the Texas Capitol when she stood for an 11-hour filibuster to block Senate Bill 5. Now, the politician is gearing up to run for governor of Texas in 2014. And whether you’re pro-life or pro-choice, you have to hand it to Davis for her gut and guile.

Sandra Bullock — Okay, so Bullock isn’t a Texas native, but she has made herself quite at home in our state. It could be argued that Bullock’s best year was 2010 when she won the Academy Award for best actress for her role in The Blind Side, but that performance is nothing compared to her latest role, in Gravity. In the dramatic thriller, Bullock plays an astronaut lost in space fighting with all her will to get home. Thus far, the actress has received nominations from both the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes for best actress.

Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyer's Club

Matthew McConaughey — Bullock isn’t the only actor having a great year. Heartthrob Matthew McConaughey has delivered on not one but two well-reviewed movies this year: the The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club, for which he has received several best-actor award nominations. The Uvalde native has come a long way from his early Dazed and Confused days, and we always look forward to what the actor does next.

Johnny Manziel — Love him or hate him, you have to hand it to Johnny Football for making it through this year relatively unfazed. He overcame the autograph controversy earlier this year to deliver an 8-4 season, a New Year's Eve bowl game and, reportedly, a spot in the NFL draft.

Richard Linklater — Leave it to Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater to dream up one of the best film trilogies of our time. For years, viewers across the world have swooned over Before SunriseBefore Sunset and, most recently, Before Midnight, which chronicles the relationship between fictional characters Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) as they navigate the joys and perils of love in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Before Midnight has already received acting recognition from the Golden Globes for Delpy’s amazing performance.

The blog is about to get even more impressive under the reins of former Tribeza editor and creative director Lauren Smith Ford, who was recently hired on at CamilleStyles.com.

The Son by Philipp Meyer

Philipp Meyer — This Austin author penned one of the most notable titles of 2013. With one successful book already under his belt (American Rust), Meyer wowed readers with his latest work, The Son. The book chronicles generations of classic Texas drama involving power, greed, land and oil.
