With the holidays just around the corner, there's no better time for men to jump on the latest fashion trend. "If you don't own a velvet blazer, get one, because it's so versatile," says Neiman Marcus men's fashion director Matthew Singer.

"You can wear it for a formal event or wear it with jeans and a T-shirt and make it look cool. I love it for formal use with the tuxedo pant that you already own. Every man should own a tuxedo. Throw on that velvet blazer, and it makes it just super chic."

At a recent runway show at the Houston Galleria store, Singer showcased some men's fashion trends, including blazers in gemstone hues and colorful patterns.

"[The season is] all about gemstones — deep burgundy and sapphire blue and emerald green," Singer says. "And have fun with it. Everyone is going to be in a black tuxedo, so stand out. And maybe you don't wear a bow tie or a tie, and your pocket square is your tie for the evening.

"It's a dress-up season. Men are starting to dress better, starting to care more, so it's going to be a dress-up for a while."
