Beyonce Rises
Does this building look like Beyoncé? New skyscraper mimics singer's curves
Beyoncé has inspired a lot of things — but a skyscraper?
The creators of a high-rise tower in Melbourne say that the Houston superstar — specifically her video for Ghost — is the impetus for a curvy skyscraper called the Premier Tower, planned near the city's Southern Cross station. The 78-story structure will house 660 apartments and a 160-room hotel.
The unique form of the building, designed by the Australian firm of Elenberg Fraser, was designed using "parametric modeling — a type of computer-aided design that allows complex shapes to be created in response to data constraints," allowing it to "swell in and out at various points around the facade," says dezeen.com, which broke the story.
As New York magazine points out, seeing Beyoncé in the plans for the 740-foot tower is "like spotting the Virgin Mary in a piece of toast."
The skyscraper joins the "Marilyn Monroe" towers in Ontario, Canada and a Zaha Hadid's vagina-shaped stadium in Qatar as notable buildings based on female body parts.
"The fact that it was not called the BeyHive is a serious missed opportunity," New York asserts. We agree.
