For roughly 40 years, Rabbit Duran has served the coldest beer in town out of the ground floor of his bar on East 6th and Chicon. Soon though, Rabbit will be closing up shop and moving on to the retired life. "Me and my regulars all got too old. They don't drink as much. We still have some people coming by, but its time for me to retire" he says.
Calling Rabbit's a dive bar would be doing it a disservice. Few bars can say they have been the starting point for many city and state level political careers. Nor have they been used as a film set for Friday Nigh Lights and many other productions. Ultimately though, few bars have the longevity and homeyness that Rabbit's is known for.
When it closes, East Austin will be losing one more multicultural watering hole where the jukebox still has Tejano music, tamales get delivered by bike and the original bartender is still serving the coldest beer in town.
