A hot Texas restaurant industry leads U.S. growth in 2013

From a new branch of Dallas seafood shack Hook Line & Sinker to ultra-hot Sway Thai in Austin to coming-soon Lee's Fried Chicken & Donuts in Houston, we've seen news of many restaurants opening in 2013. And it will only get better: A report by the National Restaurant Association says that the Texas restaurant industry will lead the country in sales growth this year.

According to the 2013 Restaurant Industry Forecast, sales at Texas restaurants will hit $40.8 billion, a 5 percent increase over 2012, and will employ 1,074,200 people. Employment gains will continue into the next decade, with an expected increase to 1,245,000 employees, or nearly 16 percent.

Nationwide, the restaurant industry will rake in $660 billion in 2013, a 3.8 percent increase over 2012, sustaining growth for the fourth year in a row. The nation has approximately 980,000 restaurants that employ 13.1 million people, which is 10 percent of the total workforce in the country.

But food costs will continue to rise, as they have for the last three years.

The Texas Restaurant Association was formed in 1937 to serve as an advocate in Texas and as a resource for the hospitality and foodservice industry. TRA represents the state's $40.8 billion restaurant industry, comprising 35,000-plus locations and a workforce of more than 1 million.
