The Austin Gorilla Run benefiting the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund was a 5k with a twist. Runners in gorilla suits dressed up to the hilt sought to break the Guinness world record for most people running a 5k... dressed as gorillas.
Families, co-workers and friends thought of creative costumes to enhance their overall appeal. Some went for the sexy gorilla, the sport team gorilla, princess gorilla and of course, some bananas thrown in the mix.
Runners were encouraged to channel their inner gorilla and make a scene.
Many people chose well known characters from movies and some went with a unique mix of brand promotions or business attire.
The event was DJ’d by Aaron Stein and he did his best to keep everyone ready to run in those itchy costumes.

The Saturday Night Live “Spartan Cheerleaders” were even represented by Jaclyn Hutzly and David Rathmamn.
The Village People gorillas danced their way through the race. Others sashayed, jogged and walked their way to the finish line.

Some gorillas even took to unicycles to help them cross the finish line.
Mark, Alessandra and even baby Zaire Beavers showed up on their Saturday to support.
There were bikes, long boards, scooters, strollers and roller blades all occupied by large and small hairy primates.
After the race ended, runners wasted no time in stripping their furry outfits in favor of cooler athletic clothes. Others simply high-tailed it to their cars.
The finish line was a hub of celebration as the participants trickled in, masks and gloves off, happy to be taking part in a world record-breaking moment.
Although it wasn’t the biggest race Austin hosts, the Austin Gorilla Run was energetic and drew a crowd in downtown on the 1st Street Bridge. Families, college kids and everyone in between found release in running through the street in a gorilla suit Saturday.
