The Scottish Rite Theater turned into a space of soul and solidarity on Saturday, February 15 when the SIMS Foundation put on the Heart of the City: A Celebration of Soul concert. Listening to such legendary acts as Bobby Patterson, Nakia, Daniel James Leopold and Tameca Jones and watching the impressive moves of the Huston-Tillotson RamNites Step Dance Team, attendees not only got a great show, they got to support a great cause.
Heart of the City shines a spotlight on the SIMS Foundation and the mental health services the organization has been providing since the mid-1990s. Named for Sims Ellison, an Austin musician who lost his battle with depression in 1995, the Foundation connects struggling members of the Austin music community with the affordable mental health care they need.
The event was lead by chairs Noel Bridges and Will Bridges and committee members including Darlene Starr, Angela Salas, Sam Elkin, Ramona Cruz-Peters and Amanda Garcia.
Among the attendees who came out in support were Tricia Bridges, Oscar and Veronica Leal, Dr. Ann Riopel and Audrey Baxter, all of whom dined, sipped, danced and raffled the night away for a very a good cause.
