Dressing for the Screen Actors Guild Awards can be a little tricky. The event is not nearly as formal as the Oscars, which gives celebs an opportunity to take some fashion risks. But it's still a dressy occasion, so they don't want to look too casual and miss the mark. Here are some of our favorite looks from the red carpet Sunday night (along with a few fashion blunders):
Fashion fave Emma Stone stood out again in a black strapless dress from Sarah Burton's pre-fall 2012 collection for Alexander McQueen. The embellished neckline adds the right touch of glitz and the mid-calf length skirt helped Stone stand out amid all he floor-length gowns. To complete the ensemble, Stone wore Luce diamond drop earrings in 18-karat gold by Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co.
Modern Family's Sofia Vergara wears a variation of the same form-fitting gown to every awards show and she has the body to pull it off. Vergara scored again in a strapless Marchesa gown in a stunning fuschia shade.
TNT, which televised the SAGs, is heavily touting a new sequel to the classic series, Dallas, which premieres this summer. But that's still not a good enough reason to trot out the previous show's stars, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and a very tired-looking Larry Hagman in an oversized Stetson. Hagman should know better than to wear a hat in the house. (The trio will make cameo appearances in the new series.)
Kyra Sedgwick, 46, showed off her smokin' hot bod in a red Pucci gown with peek-a-boo cutouts that revealed a strange tattoo just below her right ribcage area. "It's a family tattoo," she told E!, referring to the initials of her husband Kevin Bacon, son Travis and daugher Sosie. When asked for secrets of her 23-year marriage to Bacon, she said the No. 1 secret was that couples should not take relationship advice from celebrities. Good advice.
Two big winners of the night were Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis, who won Best Supporting Female Actor and Best Female Actor for their roles in The Help, but their fashion choices weren't perfect.
Davis wore a white Grecian-style strapless gown with gold embroidery on the bodice by Marchesa that would have looked better if it fit better along the bustline. Spencer continued her awards show love affair with designer Tadashi Shoji, in a silver gown cinched on the side that he created. (She also wore Tadshi to the Golden Globes, so it's a bet she'll wear him to the Oscars to keep her win streak going.) Both Tadshi gowns have veered a little toward a bridesmaid's look. However, Spencer glammed up the look with a bun atop her head.
Michelle Williams looked smashing in a lovely Valentino red gown with lace detailing at the shoulders and cap sleeves. The asymetrical hem at the front fell at ankle length, revealing her red pumps. Williams also carried a red clutch. It's hard to pull off a monocromatic look like this, but Williams did it flawlessly.
Glenn Close usually wears Armani on the red carpet, but for a change of pace she chose a black gown from Zac Posen's resort 2012 collection for the SAGs. Good choice. The gown fit perfectly and the tulle sleeves were a nice touch, providing a light coverup while revealing a glimpse of the arms — just right for a 64-year-old woman who may not want to show too much skin but still look sexy. Now that's a star.
Diane Lane, in a blue one-shoulder gown by David Meister, won style points when she pulled her hair back into a sleek ponytail. She's on the red carpet with hubby Josh Brolin.
Our fashion winner in this pack is Rose Byrne, second from left, who took the night's biggest fashion risk in a white beaded Elie Saab pantsuit that she said was a couple of years old. Not everyone liked it, but I found it a refreshing change, particularly with Bryne's bob hairstyle, which emitted a retro Michelle-Pfeiffer-in-Scarface vibe.
Wish I could say the same for Kristen Wiig, right. Her creme-colored Balenciaga halter dress was marred by a black dog collar. Melissa McCarthy, second from right, looked glam in an elegantly draped black V-neck dress gown by Badgley Mischka.
Emily Blunt was one of the few stars to wear green. The shade of the Oscar de la Renta gown was a nice contrast to all the gowns in pale and black on the red carpet.
At 90, you can wear whatever you want. Betty White always manages to look good.
Jessica Lange, on the other hand, always manages to look disheveled yet sexy. She was true to form in a brown form-fitting gown by David Meister.
How to wear black: Mary Tyler Moore, who received the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award from TV hubby Dick Van Dyke, struck the right fashion stone in a shiny black pants suit, cream-colored blouse and pearl jewelry.
How not to wear black: Tina Fey and Jane Krakowski both chose black gowns with odd silver detailing. Fey just looks boring; but what's that on Krakowski's chest?
Fashion winners Stacy Keibler, left, in a black lace Marchesa gown, and Mary Steenburgen, second from right in a flattering burgundy gown by David Meister, with their respective significant others, George Clooney and Ted Danson.
The Help cast not only won the Best Ensemble award but would have won the Best Dressed Ensemble award if one had been given out.
Even from the back, Angelina Jolie, in Jenny Packham, and Brad Pitt make a striking red carpet couple.
