MEET THE 2013 JUDGES

 


 
Devon Broglie 
Executive Coordinator of Purchasing, Whole Foods Market Southwest region
Devon lives and works in Austin, Texas where he is the Executive Coordinator of Purchasing for Whole Foods Market’s Southwest region and is a Master Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers.  He won the Texas’ Best Sommelier Competition in August of 2006 and is an active member of the Texas Sommelier Association and a board member of the Wine and Food Foundation of Texas.  In 2011 Devon passed the rigorous Master Sommelier Examination making him one of 129 wine professionals in North America and 197 in the world to hold the title Master Sommelier.
 
 
 
Marla Camp   
Owner and Publisher, Edible Austin 
Marla Camp is an award-winning journalist, artist and local food enthusiast. As owner and publisher of Edible Austin, she connects readers to the local food culture and food producers in Central Texas. In 2009, Marla was appointed Chair of the Sustainable Food Policy Board for the City of Austin and Travis County, currently serves on the Board, and will be teaching a magazine course at University of Texas in Fall, 2013.
 
 
 
 
Cathy Cochran Lewis
President, Austin Food & Wine Alliance  
Cathy Cochran-Lewis has worked with Whole Foods Market since 2004 in community relations, marketing, public relations and as a writer. Previously, Cathy was a daily newspaper journalist and then followed her passion into the culinary world to create and open cooking schools at locations across the country. She continues to be inspired in her exploration of new cooking techniques, great recipes and fresh ingredients. She serves as the President for the Austin Food and Wine Alliance and is an active member of Les Dames D’Escoffier Austin. 
 
 
   
 
Paula Disbrowe
Senior Travel Editor, Southern Living  
Paula is a Senior Travel Editor at Southern Living magazine. She is the author of four cookbooks including “Real Cajun” with Donald Link, the acclaimed chef of Herbsaint and Cochon restaurants in New Orleans, which won the prestigious 2010 JamesBeard Award for Best American Cookbook.
 
 
 
Jessica Dupuy
Food and Drink Editor, CultureMap Austin
Jessica is a freelance writer who serves as Food and Drink Editor for CultureMap Austin and has written for Texas Monthly, National Geographic Traveler, Fodor’s, Imbibe and numerous Austin and regional publicationsShe just released The Salt Lick Cookbook: A Story of Land, Family and Love in conjunction with Salt Lick owner Scott Roberts and has also written Uchi: The Cookbook, in conjunction with James Beard Award winning Executive Chef Tyson Cole. Dupuy is a member of Les Dames D’Escoffier-Austin, Foodways Texas, and the Wine and Food Foundation of Texas and is a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and a Certified Specialist of Wine through the Society of Wine Educators. 
 
 
          
 
Marshall Jones 
Executive Director, Food and Wine Foundation of Texas 
Marshall was born in Houston TX in 1968 and later moved to Austin in 1987 where attended the University of Texas at Austin studying Psychology and English. Mr. Jones worked in the food and wine business for many years and is thrilled to be the Executive Director of the Wine and Food Foundation of Texas. Mr. Jones is committed to strengthening and growing new and existing partnerships in the Texas culinary and wine community.
 
 
 
Matt McGinnis
Managing Director, Cohn & Wolfe
As the managing director of Cohn & Wolfe, Austin, Matt McGinnis provides marketing, branding and communications counsel to food and beverage clients globally. He is also an avid beverage enthusiast, chronicling his interests as a Food & Drink contributing writer for CultureMap, as the Food & Drink columnist for Austin Man Magazine, and as a blogger for  What Are You Drinking?He is passionate about the wine industry having previously worked at a winery in Oregon and in wine sales. He has served as Guest Host of Sommelier Cinema at the Alamo Drafthouse, and is a Certified Sommelier in the Court of Master Sommeliers.
 
 
 
Mary Margaret Pack   
Food Writer and Historian, Private Chef   
Mary Margaret is a food writer/historian and private chef who divides her time between Austin and San Francisco. She writes about food for various publications and food reference books, and she does regular presentations about aspects of Texas food history. About the only thing she likes as much as enjoying Austin's food and drink is reading and writing about them.
 
 
 
Patricia Sharpe
Executive Director, Texas Monthly
Patricia is an executive editor for Texas Monthly magazine. She grew up in Austin, Texas, and holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin. After a stint as a schoolteacher (teaching English and Spanish) and at the Texas Historical Commission (writing historical markers), she joined the staff of Texas Monthly, in 1974 where she now focuses exclusively on food coverage across the state. In March 2005, she wrote a memoir of her thirty years as a restaurant critic entitled “Confessions of a Skinny Bitch.” It won a James Beard Foundation award for magazine food writing. 
 
 

Cathy Strange
Global Cheese Buyer, Whole Foods Market        
Cathy is the global cheese buyer for Whole Foods Market and has become an authority at detecting international food trends during her travels around the world while seeking out vendor partners that meet Whole Foods Market’s strict Quality Standards. She is a member of the American Cheese Society, the Cheese of Choice Coalition, the Cheese Importers Association, the International Association of Culinary Professionals, Slow Foods USA and Les Dames d’Escoffier where she serves as the vice president of the Austin Chapter. She serves as New World President and an ambassador for the distinguished international Guilde des Fromagers de Saint-Uguzon, the most celebrated association of cheese mongers and specialists in France. Cathy is one of the first Americans inducted into the prestigious guild of cheese trade professionals, recognized for comprehensive knowledge and attention to the merits of French cheese.
 
 
 
Tom Thornton 
Food & Drink Editor, Austinist.com
Tom is the food & drink editor for Austinist.com and a real estate broker for Realty Austin. Tom serves on the board of the non-profit Austin Food & Wine Alliance and is an investor in Jester King Craft Brewery. Tom lives in the Southwest Austin area with his wife and two daughters.
