Keepin' It Cheesy
Austin's best queso crowned at Mohawk's Quesoff IV
On Saturday, the Quesoff wrapped up another successful year highlighted by all-you-can-eat queso and cheesy concoctions beyond our wildest dreams. More than 20 teams — from home cooks to professional chefs — competed in the competition held at the Mohawk.
Local businesses including Justine’s, Frank, Top Golf and Pelons were joined by independent queso cooks for a battle of the best queso, to be determined by a panel of celebrity judges.
Judges — Elaine Garza of Giant Noise, Bobby Johns of the Bunkhouse Group, Andy Langer of 93.3 KGSR, Black Angels lead singer Alex Maas and Courtney Bond of Texas Monthly — crowned winners in four categories: Best Meaty Recipe, Best Spicy Recipe, Best Veggie Recipe and Best Wild Card recipe. The winners are as follows.
Freedmen’s: Best Meaty Recipe and Best in Show
Queso Beso: Best Spicy Recipe
Frank: Best Veggie Recipe
Cream Team: Best Wild Card recipe for ice cream queso
But once again, the real winners of the day were the crowds of queso fans who got to sample some of the best cheese dip that Austin has to offer.
The Cream Team's wild card ice cream queso may be the best addition to the Quesoff, showing that queso can, in fact, qualify as dessert. Another crowd favorite was the mole queso infused with coffee and served on a churro, created by the Hubert's Lemonade team.
