Tacodeli's long-awaited Crestview location is now open

A recognizable, eclectic taco shop in Austin is closing its doors this month. Paco's Tacos will have its final day of service on Friday, August 21.

The restaurant announced its closure in an Instagram post on August 13. It did not give a reason for the closure.

"The time has come. We have decided to hang up our aprons," the post says. "We have had 16 great years with so many fabulous memories. The best staff and so many customers that I now consider friends."

With signs all over the exterior, a pleasantly cluttered interior full of knickknacks, handwritten menus, and an outdoor patio, Paco's Tacos was the picture of an Old Austin taco shop. The restaurant also hosted live music outside.

An expressive bio on the taco shop's website tells the story of Francisco Mercado Sanchez, a.k.a. “Paco," from northern Mexico — the progenitor of Paco's more than 100 years ago. An army veteran, Sanchez and his wife Cecelia "Cece" Mendez moved to San Antonio and opened their first restaurant in their home. The website says the Austin restaurant's recipes have been passed down by Sanchez through generations.

Although the atmosphere has been a large part of the restaurant's success, guests liked the migas tacos and margaritas. The Tex-Mex menu also included some surprises like a barbecue brisket taco and sliders.
