Kammok is officially swinging onto the east side. Beginning May 18, the cult outdoor gear company is opening its flagship store at 1401 E. Seventh St. with a party and preview of the DSNxMFG-designed space.

Purveyor of "elevated camp gear" (the outdoors kind, not the John Waters kind), Kammok has become the go-to brand for the camping set since developing its first hammock in 2010. Since then, the line has expanded to include single and double hammocks (in Texas, California, and Colorado flag colors, naturally), as well as shelters, blankets, trail quilts, sleeping bags, and other accessories.

The Kammok Gear Shop on the corner of East Seventh and Navasota streets is the first for the company, which has traditionally sold online and through other retailers. To mark this milestone, the company is hosting a party on May 18 from 5-8 pm for campers, neighbors, and friends.

Peruse the brand's full line while sipping Tito's cocktails, Austin Eastciders, and Big Bend Brewing beers. Neighboring Granny's Tacos and a handful of other trucks will provide the noshes, while Raina Rose provides the tunes. Guests can also take part in lawn games like giant Jenga and cornhole or sit and stay awhile in one of the company's hammocks, which will be available for customers to test out.

Another highlight of the evening is the unveiling of the east side's newest mural, located on the side of the shop. Created by Austin-based artists Jamie McCormick and Brittany Callender, "Sculpture Falls" faces bustling East Seventh Street. This isn't the first time Kammok has ventured into public art; the building's Navasota-facing mountain mural by another local artist, Emily Eisenhart, quickly became a 'gram-worthy spot after it was completed in 2017.
