Award-winning photographer and beekeeper brings buzzy new art to Austin's Waterloo Park

BEE-AUTIFUL ART

If there’s one thing Austinites can agree on, it's our love for local art and honeybees. A local organization is combining both for a free, immersive experience at a cherished Austin park beginning April 23.

“Seeing Bees” is a new educational art installation at Waterloo Park that will display a series of anatomical, microscopic honey bee works by Dan Winters, a distinguished and award-winning photographer. Land conservation nonprofit Wild Spirit Wild Places (WSWP) is partnering with local honeymaker Round Rock Honey and Waterloo Greenway for the exhibit, with additional support from H-E-B and perfume designer Guerlain.

The installation will feature large format images of honey bees that were captured with a field emissions scanning electron microscope. Winters is best known for his celebrity portraits, so this latest project is entirely new territory for him. Luckily he is well-versed in the art of beekeeping; He started keeping his own bees at just nine-years-old.

Winters said in a press release that the images will provide attendees with a never-before-seen view of the insects.

“These images magnify bees to an unprecedented level with every hair in focus, allowing for a view into the complexity of the honeybee first hand,” said Winters.

“Seeing Bees” is free to the public, and there will be several free public programs and events in conjunction with the exhibit at Waterloo Park. Austinites of all ages will have the opportunity to get educated about the importance of conservation, biodiversity, and pollinators in our local communities.

WSWP and Round Rock Honey have joined forces before to raise awareness about native bees in Austin and Round Rock; In 2022 they helped pass resolutions to designate both cities as Bee City USA affiliates, joining the neighboring city of Bee Cave on the Central Texas roster.

WSWP CEO Dr. Karen Looby said in the release that her organization is proud to support the exhibit, calling it a “one-of-a-kind experience celebrating bees.”

“This exhibit provides an amazing look at the intricacies of our bees and provides insight on how they are uniquely equipped to support the health of our environment,” Dr. Looby said. “With the help of the community, we look forward to ensuring that our pollinators across Texas are supported for generations to come.”

Longstanding North Austin brewery closing down after 15-year run

cherish the memories

The Austin beer community will surely miss this brewer. Circle Brewing Company, one of the oldest breweries in North Austin, is shutting down operations at its longstanding Braker Lane location and its 23-acre property in Elgin.

Although a statement on the Circle Brewing website doesn't clearly give a reason for its closing, founders Ben Sabel and Judson Mulherin alluded to ongoing financial troubles since the company's inception at the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis.

"As became a recurring motif for us, this was the first major example of our flawless business timing," the statement said. "With far too much optimism and not nearly enough money, we opened our doors with two draft beers (Blur Texas Hefe and Envy Amber) and barely a dozen draft accounts."

Sabel and Mulherin shared their story of the company's resilience despite financial setbacks, relying on the local community and other small Central Texas breweries.

"In our first two years of operation, we were so broke that we couldn't even afford to buy yeast," they wrote. "But the Austin brewing community and the real spirit of camaraderie was such that we just had to drive out to Blanco and fill up a few corny kegs from our friends at Real Ale. In the coming years, we'd come to owe countless other members of the local brewing community thanks for all the advice, friendships, and assistance."

Circle Brewing had only opened its Elgin location in May of 2023, after six years of planning and three years of extended buildout due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company's goal with the 23-acre property was to grow all the ingredients needed to use in their beers and develop a fully Texan-made, sustainable beer.

"Our biggest regret is not having the time to see our vision through and fulfilling the enormous potential we know would have paid off enormously," the website said. "It was so close to becoming reality. We're sorry we didn't have the time to see it to the end."

The Braker Lane location is fully closed, but Sabel and Mulherin said they are attempting to remain open at their Elgin facility for "at least another week." All of the company's remaining beer and merchandise will be sold at heavy discounts until Friday, September 22.

More information about the company shutdown can be found on circlebrewing.com.

Drake surprises Houston fans with news that he found a home in Texas

newstonian drake?

Hip-hop superstar Drake announced that he may be moving to Houston at his concert at the Toyota Center on Monday, September 18.

As he repeatedly told the audience during his opening night show on Sunday, Drake, who's known for representing his hometown of Toronto, loves the Bayou City. Aside from many concerts in H-Town over the years, has been known to visit his second hometown, often talking about it in his songs.

He's been spotted on many visits to Houston, including sightings playing basketball at the University of Houston and St. Thomas High School and grabbing a burger at Bun B's Trill Burgers.

Drake dropped the news during the second show in a row at the Toyota Center on Monday as part of his "It's All A Blur" tour with rapper 21 Savage.

"I want to tell you something. I'm excited I get to share this with night two. I had to make it official first, but I've been looking for a long time, trying to figure out, you know, the right place for me to live, where I belong outside of Toronto," Drake told fans. "And I finally, finally after all these years, I found me a place in Houston, Texas. So y'all will be seeing me around!"

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Nick Scurfield, fans can be heard cheering before Drake even finished his announcement.

It's hard to say if Drake could just be playing with fans' emotions, after dropping similar news in a different city?
