South Austin craft food and drink neighbors host chocolatey tasting tour
Walk this way
If Valentine’s Day is reigniting your passion for chocolate, or you simply haven’t gotten enough yet, your options for expansion don’t get much better than a chocolate crawl. The Yard, a mixed-use development most commonly known for housing St. Elmo Brewing Company, is hosting its annual Winter Walkabout on February 18 with one common ingredient.
Tenants of the industrial complex (walkable in a very different way than, say, Red River) will offer cocktails, beer, drinks, and food along St. Elmo Street and some of its offshoots. Walkabouts are held quarterly, and last year’s winter edition centered around ginger, with snacks like ginger and peach marshmallows by Murphy’s Mellows and a house-made boozy ginger ale by St. Elmo Brewing.
This year, there are ten participants: St Elmo Brewing, Blue Norther, Spokesman, Vacancy Brewing, Still Austin, The Austin Winery, Spicy Boys, Huckleberry, Texas Sake, Texas Sushiko.
Although a menu based entirely on chocolate would obviously lend itself well to desserts, there is impressive variety between the more than ten offerings, and not one chocolate martini. (Sorry if that’s what you’re into.)
Some standouts from the menu include a dessert roti with seasonal fruit by fried chicken favorite Spicy Boys, a garlic-infused mocha by Spokesman, and an ice cream sandwich with imperial stout from St. Elmo Brewing. Two vendors took a well-known approach to savory chocolate, by adding mole; Seafood truck Huckleberry offers blue crab flautas with mole, and Texas Sushiko adds the sauce to a hand roll with salmon and pickled peppers.
Thanks to a high concentration of breweries, distilleries, and other drink makers, this will be an alcohol-heavy event, with a large portion of the menu containing different types of chocolatey drinks.
The 2023 Winter Walkabout at The Yard is free to attend, and takes place from noon to 5 pm. Save the event on Facebook and check out a full menu, shared by St. Elmo Brewing, on Instagram.
