Have you ever wanted to buy a retreat? Now’s your chance; A remarkable 12-acre property on the Sabinal River in Utopia, Texas, has hit the market for $2.5 million.

As investors are snatching up properties left and right for the next wedding venue or event space, the Utopia River Retreat is the next hidden gem in a booming wedding industry. The Knot estimated in 2022 that a Texas couple’s average wedding budget is $27,000. The website also estimates that 30 percent of a couple's wedding budget goes toward a perfect venue for their special day.

The next owners of the retreat can continue to provide couples with a naturally beautiful Hill Country experience — one that’s continued for over a century. The property's legacy as a wedding destination began with the first wedding ceremony in 1861. The only structure on the land at the time was a stone fort, which has since been converted into the “Fortress," a lodge that can sleep 12 guests.

Other features of the Fortress include:

  • Two master suites
  • Three semi-private lofts
  • Full kitchen
  • Fireplace
  • Wrap-around porch
  • Original stonework on display

The retreat also boasts nine guest cabins in addition to the Fortress. Each cabin has its own full kitchen, living space, and covered porch. Three cabins have two bedrooms that can host up to six guests, and six cabins are single-bedrooms that can sleep up to four guests.

Another highlighted feature of the property is the renovated hay barn. The previous owners turned it into a bespoke event space with an open floor plan, wood beam ceilings, a stone fireplace, and attached deck. Also around the barn is a large green space and a covered gazebo with a breathtaking view of the Sabinal River.

The Utopia River Retreat sale is facilitated by Chad Foster, the founder and broker of Uvalde-based real estate group Foster Farm and Ranch.

“With its current amenities and space for expansion, Utopia River Retreat provides potential buyers with a lot of entrepreneurial opportunities,” said Foster in a press release. “The event space, cabins, and renovated fort make Utopia River Retreat a great addition to any real estate portfolio.”

Even outside of wedding season, the property can host many events such as family vacations, reunions, and corporate retreats. The town of Utopia is located about 140 miles southwest of Austin. Austinites may be familiar with the area thanks to the long-running Utopiafest that used to offer live music and camping.

More information about the property can be found at the utopiariverretreat.com, and more information about the listing can be found at fosterfarmandranch.com.

That fun-meets-fancy vibe is a specialty of W Austin, where their sleek, modern-metallic surrounds (Chrome-finished chairs! Bronze accents! Titanium-hued walls!) are mixed with whimsical touches like a statement chandelier and coffered ceilings. It's also the perfect template to add in another trend: bold colors. 6 things to know in Austin food right now: Neighborhood Italian favorite plans new pizza joint

News You Can Eat

Editor’s note:We get it. It can be difficult to keep up with the fast pace of Austin’s restaurant and bar scene. We have you covered with our regular roundup of essential food news.

Openings

Word is out that one of Austin’s favorite Italian restaurants, L’Oca d’Oro, is opening a pizza spot. Details are sparse so far, but the concept's name will be Bambino, led by L'Oca's team, chef Fiore Tedesco and Adam Orman, and inspired by pizza from their respective upbringing in the Northeast. Expected to open in summer 2023, the concept will include a full bar with specialty cocktails and a curated wine list. The neighborhood pizza joint will follow the same ethos as L'Oca — utilizing ingredients at their peak to create a refined pizza to be enjoyed by all.

Only an impossibly trendy bar could seriously pull off a name like the Wiggle Room, and this one certainly does. Now open between its sister bars Ranch 616, Beez Kneez, and Cat’s Pajamas, this West Texas-themed mirage includes lots of succulent, snake, and cowboy references amid its otherwise disco-safari aesthetic. It looks as chaotic as it sounds. Since its grand opening on November 25, the place has been a revolving door for DJs and dancers who love “stiff drinks.” Reserve at wiggleroomatx.com.

No one plans a party like an Austin brewery, but it can be hard to keep up with everyone’s favorites. City Brew Tours, a company that gives brewery tours in 18 cities around the United States, is new in Austin, with tours starting in February. Each tour visits three or four locations, and so far Austin breweries include Independence Brewing Co., Family Business Beer Company, Celis Brewery, Beerburg Brewing, among other unnamed partners. A knowledgeable guide brings visitors along with included transportation and a meal or snack, then encourages them to support the local business by taking products home. Reserve at citybrewtours.com.

Other news and notes

Cookie Rich and influencer A Taste of Koko, two Austin institutions with cult followings, are teaming up for a limited-edition holiday flavor. These gold-dusted, white chocolate chip sandwich cookies contain dark fudge and marshmallow fluff for an elevated wintertime combination called the Hot Koko. Her curated boxes come with the Hot Koko, birthday sprinkle, cookies and cream, and red velvet flavors in packs of four ($18) or 12 ($36). Order online at getcookierich.com, or at the Austin trailer.

Tiff’s Treats is making stocking-stuffers and gift swaps easy this year with holiday packages and same-day delivery. Santa Packs come with a blank card for writing a note to the big guy, and gift bundles include the founders’ book It’s Not Just Cookies and an earring collaboration with Kendra Scott. Customers can also add an ornament inspired by El Arroyo’s signs, reading “In a world where you can be anything, be kind” ($18). Order online at cookiedelivery.com.

Anyone with a ring in their pocket or on their finger this holiday season should consider stopping by Camp Lucy for its annual “Sip, See, Experience” this January 7. From 10 am to 4 pm, the Hill Country wedding venue is putting its best foot forward for tours, including specialty snacks and drinks from Chef Meredith Shaffer and the rest of the culinary team. It’s free to attend, so it’s worth a try even four couples with a different dream venue. RSVP on Eventbrite.

Founder of boozy Austin brand weds local singer in destination event

Ranch Rider

Do you ever look at a stranger’s wedding photos and really, really wish you had somehow been invited to the wedding because it looked like such a great time? That’s what Rebecca Adelson and Quentin Cantu’s wedding was like.

Adelson, an Austin actress, singer, and model, tied the knot with Cantu, one of the cofounders of popular Austin hard seltzer company Ranch Rider Spirits, in New Jersey on July 25, 2021.

But the couple has actually known each other for 15 years, Adelson told me over Zoom. They met in college at George Washington University. It’s a story worthy of a romantic comedy.

“We met freshman year, and he was obsessed with me immediately,” Adelson said, laughing.

Adelson had a boyfriend, so they couldn’t get involved. But they kept running into each other. She sang with an a cappella group, and he was in a band. They shared a rehearsal space. After graduation, they ended up living in the same neighborhood. One night, they even ended up at the same bar. And the rest is history.

Cantu proposed during an anniversary getaway in a rental house on Lake Travis. The two were eating chicken wings for breakfast (there are no rules on vacation!) when he got down on one knee. He had a room full of their loved ones waiting for her when they got back from their trip, and hey celebrated even more when Adelson’s band played a gig at The Oasis.

“My band does a version of ‘At Last,’ and I had our other vocalist sing it so we could do a little ‘just got engaged’ dance,” Adelson said.

After that, the path to the altar wasn’t an easy one. Like many couples, Adelson and Cantu had to reschedule their wedding twice due to the pandemic. They were supposed to get married in August of 2020…then May of 2021…then it finally happened in July 2021. And it was worth the wait.

The couple got married at the Art Factory in New Jersey, a venue which was formerly a rope factory, so it fits the industrial vibe the couple was going for, Rebecca said.

And of course, Cantu being a founder of Ranch Rider Spirits, they had plenty of Ranch Rider on hand. Including an extra-special twist on the “his and hers” specialty cocktails that are popular at many weddings. An Aperol spritz for her and a mezcal ranch water for him, both canned with special labels featuring childhood photos of the couple.

There are so many special moments Adelson remembers most about that day, but there are a few that stand out. They loved their Austin rabbi so much, they flew him out to New Jersey to perform the wedding, so Adelson has fond memories of the ceremony.

“He’s so charismatic and he’s also an incredible musician and singer, so he was singing a lot of traditional prayers, and everyone was blown away. I loved every minute of that.”

She also loved incorporating Jewish traditions into the ceremony. Family members came up to give the traditional seven blessings, and she used her late grandfather’s shawl for the ceremony. They also got married underneath the same chuppah that many of Adelson’s family members have used for their weddings.

“All the cousins have used it, and we’ve had our Hebrew names embroidered in it, so I really loved that part.”

“His and hers” canned cocktails (an Aperol spritz for her and a mezcal ranch water for him), featured special labels with childhood photos of the couple.

This downtown Austin destination is a wedding dream come true

I Do, I Do

If you've got a wedding to plan and are dreaming of a downtown affair where soul meets style, the W Austin is the whole package.

Start envisioning your big day (or weekend!) at W Austin with these dreamy trends, knowing that with their fully personalized Whatever/Whenever wedding services, you can have your cake and eat it, too.

Glam and grand parties
With the last couple of years in the rearview mirror, many are ready to put their party pants back on and go big for wedded bliss. With seven venues and reception sites at the W Austin, this venue is the MVP — offering space for up to 440 guests, so your wedding can be bigger and better than your wildest dreams. They even have additional perks for large weddings, from couples' massages to room upgrades and more. Endless guest list? Check. Over-the-top, glamorous design elements and floral arrays? The W Austin can accommodate it all.

Farm-to-table comfort meets delicious Southern sophistication at the W Austin, with outside-the-box wedding menus prepared by their world-class chef. Boutique-style affairs
Posh, blowout parties are one thing, but there's also a movement toward continuing to embrace the intimacy of a smaller, micro-wedding. This type of gathering — generally under 75 guests — allows for a high degree of personalization in every detail. The W Austin has a number of spaces that can be just as chic, but on a cozier level to foster familiarity and comfort. You'll also have all the heart eyes for the rooftop terrace, which has stunning skyline views of downtown and Lady Bird Lake. A more intimate ceremony or reception here feels just as grand; it's the best wedding backdrop in the city and makes for a wow photo opp. Word to the wise: Tenting is available for the terrace, making any-season celebrations possible.

Cake is a time-honored wedding tradition, and W Austin has this part handled, too. Their custom-designed cakes are flawlessly prepared in-house by a pastry team who draws upon classic European traditions fused with modern inspo, all while staying true to your vision, whether that's classic elegance, dramatic dazzle, vintage charm, or minimalist simplicity. And for those looking to break from tradition and follow the trend toward a more unexpected sugar rush, the W Austin can whip up any confection, from cupcakes to mini cakes and cookies.

Local music legend's niece ties the knot in romantic Austin ceremony

Real Wedding

Before they ever met, Georgette Hoang’s husband knew he would date her one day. Hoang, formerly Georgette Raad, never met her husband, Long, when they had a class together at St. Edward’s University. But he Facebook stalked her for months, and they finally met after Georgette transferred to the University of Texas.

The pair started dating a year later, and eight years after that, they got married in a November 2021 ceremony at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church in South Austin, followed by a reception at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center on the UT campus.

Georgette’s favorite moment of the wedding was the second she saw her soon-to-be-husband as she walked down the aisle.

“We didn’t do a first look,” Georgette said. “We didn’t talk the day of, we didn’t text, we didn’t call, we didn’t see each other. We made it a point to not see each other after the rehearsal dinner. So I was walking down the aisle and we had a violinist. It was goosebump music. But [I was] just walking down the aisle with my dad, and Long and I were staring at each other. There were so many people there, and all we saw was each other. That was the most special part of the day for me.”

She said her husband isn’t a crier — but he let it all out when he saw her.

“I’ve never seen him cry like that,” she said.

Another favorite moment was the final dance of the night after the reception. The party filed outside to set up their sparklers for the couple’s grand exit, and the newlyweds took a moment to themselves to dance together to Etta James’ “At Last.”

After two postponements due to the pandemic, Georgette loved finally having all their family and friends together. They had a big wedding party — 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen — and loved bringing everyone together to celebrate.

But there was one special person missing from the celebration. Georgette’s uncle was Clifford Antone, founder of the classic Austin blues club Antone’s and the record store that shares the same name. Antone died in 2006, but Georgette found ways to make sure her uncle was around on her special day. They cut out one of his blue shirts into the shape of his initials and sewed it inside of her dress. They placed a photo of him on the memory table. And they even hosted their rehearsal dinner upstairs at Antone’s in his memory.

“He made an impact on the world for sure, and Austin and the music industry. But for me it’s beyond that,” Georgette said. “He just showed me how to be a good person. He would take his shirt off his back for anyone. I tried to keep his legacy living on in different ways.”

Georgette said Antone was like another parent to her when growing up. She said he always told her the story of when she was born, she was so little that he held her in the palm of his hand, and that was when he knew he would always take care of her.

Georgette said Antone still takes care of her, even more than 15 years after his death. She sees yellow butterflies often, which she views as him checking in on her. And right before she got on the phone for our interview, a yellow butterfly circled around her.

Popular restaurant in Austin suburb brings spinoff bar and live music to Leander

Down the Rabbit Hole

A new bar is hopping into a growing Austin suburb: After the success of opening the Lucky Rabbit in the Lake Travis area last year, Matt Morcher, Sandra Cleveland, and Matt and Shelly Delahoussaye are set to open a new spinoff neighborhood bar in Leander next week.

Located located in the San Gabriel Ridge shopping center at 2080 N. US-183 unit 145, The Rabbit Hole will open on Friday, March 31, starting at 2 pm. The team will celebrate with a grand opening party, featuring live music by Luke Daniel from 6-9 pm and Carter Whitaker from 9 pm - midnight. A special time-related happy hour will offer new specials for guests to enjoy at the top of every hour.

The name is, of course, a small nod to The Lucky Rabbit, but also an invitation to "go down the rabbit hole” — whether with friends and family or passing time solo. The bar will serve high quality cocktails in a swanky space, bringing in live music acts most weekend nights for locals to enjoy.

The 68-seat interior play on the theme of time and the trippy experience of going down the rabbit hole, featuring exposed brick walls with murals of clock-like rabbits and gears painted by local artist Sarah Blankenship, along with a variety of light fixtures featuring Edison-style bulbs and gears that light the space.

The drink menu carries that theme through its featured cocktails, with rabbit names like Bug’s Old Fashioned (rye, demerara, bitters, orange, luxardo cherry); the 24 Carrot Gold (vodka, triple sec, blood orange, lime, bitters); and the Bubbly Bunny (gin, lavender, lemon, prosecco). Perfect as we head into hotter temperatures, frozen drink option include traditional and flavored margaritas, the Hot Hare (Spicy Mango, Chamoy, Tajin rim), or the Perky Bunny (Red Bull floater, Pop Rocks rim). Local beer and wine is also available, as well as bar snacks. Heartier food options will also be available to order from neighboring restaurants, Sabino’s Pizza Pub and Ah Thinh Asian Cuisine.

Morcher and Cleveland are veterans in the industry with a big heart for the local community:

“Sandra and I live in the area, and we often found ourselves looking for a nearby neighborhood bar to hang out in," said Morcher via release. "We saw this space, and felt that there was great potential to make it into a fun local spot — so we just decided to create one ourselves! We’re excited to be bringing this to an underserved area here in Leander, Liberty Hill and beyond. It was tough to find a place out here with affordable craft cocktails, great service, and live music on the weekends. We’re thrilled to be able to bring that to our community.”
