The All Dolled Up: Playing with Identity in 1940s Paper Dolls exhibit features 11 paper doll books from a collection donated to the university’s School of Human Ecology. The display brings together a selection of paper dolls that demonstrate the cultural messages conveyed to young girls in the 1940s.
From stewardesses to WWII patriots to starlets, the paper dolls depict an idealized feminine appearance that influenced the way young girls constructed their own private and public identities. The exhibit includes paper dolls of classic Hollywood movie stars such as Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, and child actress Jane Withers.
The exhibit, on view in room 1.506, will be on display until November 17.
