The Pop Almanac Podcast #22: Sitcom Immaturity
This week on The Pop Almanac, Brendan and Duncan take issue with Linda Holmes' article "The Incredible Shrinking Liz Lemon," which makes the point that Tina Fey's character on beloved comedy 30 Rock has devolved from a strident careerwoman to a lost little girl in six seasons. Is the show, and the character, really required to live up to the standards of responsible adults to begin with?
This leads to the larger issue: that most sitcom characters are overgrown children, from the aptly titled Arrested Development to the looong line of fat, slobbish TV husbands with inexplicably attractive (and responsible) wives. Which shows revel in bad behavior, and which shows mock characters that haven't grown up? Are there characters on television that are funny, and also act like real people that you'd trust with your finances?
All these questions, and plenty of whining about how terrible but popular Two and a Half Men is!
