Interpreted as a way of addressing the difficult production of Hammett, his first film in the US, The State of Things is Wim Wenders' parable on filmmaking and its struggles. Director Freidrich Munroe (Patrick Bauchau) and his crew run out of film during a shoot in Portugal and become stranded when their producer is nowhere to be found. An examination of many themes including love, friendship, nostalgia, and dreams. Also featuring Samuel Fuller as the crew's cameraman and Roger Corman as a lawyer.
