The Contemporary Austin presents Foghorn Elegy

eventdetail

Consisting of handmade musical instruments, defunct maritime equipment, nautical wayfinding tools, and the natural landscape as inspiration, Steve Parker’s Foghorn Elegy pays homage to disappearing and obsolete methods of seafaring communication. Produced from salvaged marching band equipment, the foghorn-like sculptures emit an 11-track audio soundscape Parker recorded on brass instruments in his garage. Facing its radio tower counterparts across the lagoon, this sculpture encourages viewers to listen deliberately, not unlike the experience of putting an ear up to a shell to “hear” the sea.

The Contemporary Austin will present an immersive, sunset performance alongside Parker’s installation. Utilizing signal flags, conch shells, bells, horns, and materials found on the grounds of Laguna Gloria, dancers, musicians, and performance artists - together with the artist himself - will activate both the sculpture and its surrounding environment.

Foghorn Elegy will be performed Brent Baldwin, Josh Balleza, Cameron Beauchamp, Tara Bhattacharya, Alexa Capareda, Alex Cruz, Verena Gaudy, Thor Harris, Mark McCoin, Pamela Martinez, Martín Rodriguez, and The University of Texas at San Antonio Sousaphone & Euphonium Ensemble, directed by Gary Poffenbarger.
