Jam-packed weekend
Breaking Records: Austin tackles the most events in one day
There's always a lot going on in Austin, but this weekend is guaranteed to exhaust even the most social of social butterflies. There are eight registered special events taking place on Saturday in and around the downtown area—that sets a city record for the most simultaneous events on the same day in Austin. And we're not talking about cheesy little festivals.
So what's so special about this weekend? Two words: bye week.
The Austin Film Festival, Texas Book Festival, Gypsy Picnic Trailer Food Festival, Tour de Fat Ride, Purple Strides 5k, March to Abolish the Death Penalty, Viva la Vida and the weekly Austin Farmer's Market are big-time events that have been around for years and attract thousands of people (including big name stars like Molly Shannon and Johnny Depp). And all that's just Saturday.
Add to your calendar all the accompanying events kicking off tonight and those not registered with the city and you have an overwhelming agenda.
So what's so special about this weekend? Two words: bye week. There isn't a UT football game which, to any event planner, signals the perfect weekend. Not only are you guaranteed fabulous weather but you don't have to compete with the beloved Horns.
Unfortunately, all those event planners have to compete with everyone else who had the same brilliant idea. Good thing people in Austin are active and have stamina.
While it's impossible to make all the events this weekend (believe me, I've considered every scenario) it is possible to make a few and get through the madness without a migraine. The city is encouraging people to avoid parking problems and carpool, bike or use public transportation instead because there will be road closures.
Should you find yourself annoyed with the chaos (or frustrated you can't do it all), take a deep breath and take pride in the fact you live in a city capable of hosting such a variety of events.
