An immersive theater project will take over a local farm with myth, live music, and a farm-to-table feast together under the Austin sky this spring. From April 18-20, Boggy Creek Farm — one of Texas' oldest continuously operating urban farms — transforms into a magical stage for an immersive theatrical experience: Fables from the Farm.
This fantastical production weaves original folkloric storytelling with live musical performances, all while celebrating the farm's commitment to sustainable agriculture. Equal parts entertainment and ecological celebration, the event invites audiences to engage with their local food systems.
“The unique challenge, and mission, of the Fables from the Farm series, is to share the multi-dimensionality of a farm through song, story and ritual," says show creator Jade Fusco in an email to CultureMap. "In creating the show, we research the history of the farm, the neighborhood and surrounding community, as well as the regenerative practices and ethos implemented, and weave it all into the music and characters."
Guests will get to explore the farm, which advances the story depending on where they physically end up.
"The opportunity is to guide people to connect with the farm environment through all of their senses as well as their imagination, and to thus develop a deeper relationship with local farmlands where food is growing, where people are actively stewarding the Earth well. When we add the on-site dinner element, it wraps it all together," Fusco says.
While the Fables from the Farm debut sold out all three performances and spawned a full-length album, this year brings a completely new story. An ensemble of actors and musicians will present an original tale about Nature's caretakers battling mischievous goblins who threaten both the farm and humanity's connection to the natural world.
From April 18-19, attendees can experience both the musical performance and guided tours of historic Boggy Creek Farm, while April 20 offers a special finale: a family-style banquet curated by Chef Ciara of The Kaya Café. The feast will showcase the season's bounty through dishes crafted from Boggy Creek's own harvest and other local producers, with thoughtfully prepared options spanning vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free, and meat-centric preferences.
Beyond the performance and meal, the event aims to inspire support for local food systems and a shift away from industrialized agriculture, grounding the experience in both celebration and purposeful reflection.
“Since the 2023 debut, AI and other digital interventions have become even more ubiquitous in our lived reality, creativity and relationships, all the while, oligarchs are threatening the safety and sanctity of our natural world and basic human rights," says Fusco. "So for the show this year, Reviving Reverence, the plot has thickened to reflect this! There are death-cult goblins afoot now, and they want to build high-rise condos on the farm! But we won’t let them. We must create shared rituals honoring mother nature as a part of the show, in order to stave them off and keep the farm healthy."
Tickets ($62.95 for music and tour, $183.15 with dinner) are available at farmtotabletheater.com. Boggy Creek Farm is located at 3414 Lyons Rd.
