ZACH announces big names for Topfer Theatre opening weekend celebration
ZACH Theatre's fancy new Topfer Theatre is nearing completion on the corner of Riverside and Lamar, with an opening celebration slated for the final weekend of September.
The big debut weekend celebration will include a black-tie gala with an iconic country crooner and an exclusive concert with a Broadway musical veteran.
First, on Thursday, Sep. 27, the legendary crooner Johnny Mathis will be the first individual to perform live inside the new state-of-the-art facility for a black-tie gala, Once Upon a Dream. After pre-dinner cocktails in the Skyline Lounge and dinner in the outdoor People's Plaza, Mathis will perform his greatest hits from his nearly five-decade career.
Two nights later, Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell will perform with members of ZACH's own company members during Deep in the Heart of ZACH. The new theatre's opening show will be Ragtime, the first musical with which Mitchell earned a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. (He later won for his lead role in a revival of Kiss me Kate.)
During this double live concert, Mitchell (who also plays one of Rachel Berry's dads on Glee) will perform twice throughout the evening filled with food and music and mingling throughout the ZACH campus. VIP ticket holders will also be invited to attend an all-night dance party afterward.
The big blue theatre is already making an impact on the landscape of downtown Austin. Now it's time to fill up the theatre and get the shows under way. With these two incredible evenings of live performance and community, ZACH is showing they know precisely how to get the part(ies) started.
