'Fungi and friends' workshop sprouts in Austin museum's new naturalist series
As part of a new series of nature-inspired events at the Elisabet Ney Museum, mushroom-minded Austinites can enjoy the outdoors this Saturday and learn about local plant life at the same time. Taking place from 1 pm to 4 pm, “Hidden Partnerships: Fungi and Friends Workshop” will examine the relationship between mycelium and the museum’s native prairie plants.
The museum’s namesake cared deeply about her environment and purposely selected the studio for its habitat of native animals, insects, and grasses.
Naturalists at the Ney is a thematic series of workshops, guided explorations, and art-making activities on the first Saturday of every month in April, May, and June. Led by museum educators and community partners, the series invites Austinites to learn more about the historic landscape surrounding Elisabet Ney’s Formosa studio.
May’s installment in the series welcomes Chris Garza from the Central Texas Mycological Society for a short ecology and herb tour exploring how fungi are entangled in all aspects of life from soil to plants, and even human biomes.
Attendees will have a chance to sharpen their plant and mushroom identification skills while learning about the medicinal benefits of plants and fungi, and everyone will head home with a recycled mushroom block.
If you miss out on this month’s series, there’s another chance to celebrate the beloved local museum at its 10th annual Ney Day party on Saturday, May 25th from 12 pm to 4 pm. Commemorating the iconic artist and her legacy, this yearly event is an afternoon dedicated to women in the arts, sciences, and civic culture.
Free and open to all ages, the festivities feature artist-led projects, demonstrations, games, live music, and local food vendors.
