Wye Oak is stepping back into the spotlight with a brand-new sound

Wye Oak band
Wye Oak plays the Parish on March 13. Wye Oak/ SXSW.com

Name: Wye Oak

Featured track: "The Tower" (from the album Shriek due April 2014)

City of origin: Baltimore, Maryland

Genre: Indie rock

In one sentence: "Wye Oak's records work on many levels: as rock music that billows majestically, as pop music that gets its hooks into you in more ways than one, and as fascinating and mysterious examinations of doomed romance." - NPR

Why we chose them: Artistically defeated following a relentless tour schedule supporting the hit album Civilian, guitarist/singer Jenn Wasner and bandmate Andy Stack took a break from music. After Stack moved from their hometown of Baltimore to Portland, Wasner decided to abandon the guitar in order to learn the bass. With Wasner taking over the bass lines and Stack in charge of the rhythm for the new album, Shriek, fans can expect to hear a real sonic diversion.

SXSW official showcase: Thursday, March 13 at 11:45 pm at The Parish
