Grab your balls: PongRock returns for another season of social ping pong
Ping pong: The sport with a silly name regarded by most sports fans as insignificant in the scope of other competitive athleticism.
To others, like friends Dustin Maxey and Rich Panter, it’s an easy, affordable social game that gets people drinking and laughing. The two entrepreneurs love the game so much they even organized their own social ping pong league.
PongRock, as it’s known around these parts, is the weekly organized pong-ing club for folks that share their casual enjoyment for the sport popularized in Forrest Gump, South Park and, y’know… China.
“We don’t call it table tennis. That’s for the experts,” says Maxey. “We’re more about just messing around with a beer in your hand.”
Set up to accommodate all skill levels, PongRock is divided into social and competitive divisions. The three levels are divided into: Just Play Beer Pong, Had a Table Growing Up and Ping Pong Black Belt. That way, the tipsy ping pong dabblers are safe to pong while intoxicated while the hidden ping pong savants battle it out for glory.
We don’t call it table tennis. That’s for the experts. We’re more about just messing around with a beer in your hand.
The emphasis is not on rules and regulations, either. ("The only ones obsessed with the rules are the ones who aren't going to win anyway," says Maxey.) Among the list of rules on the website: "Don't cheat or we'll kick you in the head."
According to Panter, PongRock's membership is pretty evenly split between men and women. “We get a lot of office groups and young professionals, your typical bar demographic. Except for the occasional awesome old dude who shows up to beat everyone.”
Maxey and Panter are themselves ping pong whizzes, having both grown up with tables in their homes in Houston. “We can hang in the expert league, but we’re not the best anymore,” says Maxey. “The players just keep getting better and better each season. Plus, I’m usually the guy who’s drunk at the games.”
After meeting on a study abroad trip to Spain with Texas State University, Maxey and Panter realized their shared love of the game at the Ping Pong Team Challenge put on by local nonprofit Girlstart. They played folks from the Austin Table Tennis Association and, despite their training, didn’t score a single point.
“That’s why we don’t call it table tennis,” laughs Panter. “What we’re doing is ping pong.”
Their shared experience united the two friends in their desire to create a more relaxed environment for “garage ping pong players.” A week later, the pair gathered their friends together to lay the foundation of what would soon become PongRock.
“We just thought it would be funny if it actually happened. If just 15 people sign up on the website, then we have to do it,” recalls Maxey. “Then we got 40 people right out the gates. So then we had to figure out how to run a tournament.”
Now headed into their fifth season of badass ping pong, PongRock is looking forward to their biggest season yet. With the help of The Belmont’s Matt Thompson, the PongRock guys are hoping for even bigger sponsors and even bigger contests every week.
“Matt’s really been instrumental in making it all happen,” says Panter. “We followed him over to The Belmont, and there really is nowhere better to set up our tables than on those outdoor balconies.”
“Although, some of our contests were bad ideas,” Maxey laughs. “We did a contest using racquetballs instead of ping pong balls once, and the racquetballs were just bouncing all over the place, out on to Sixth Street.”
Clearly, the fun is far from over for PongRock as it continues to grow each season. The two friends currently have six regulation size tables to accommodate the 70 or so players who rotate in through their Wednesday 7-10pm schedule. They’re hoping to keep getting the word out and growing.
For starters, Maxey and Panter will set up a ping pong table amidst all the clubs on The University of Texas campus Wednesday when school gets back in session. Then Wednesday night, they’re taking their tables out for the Season 5 Kick-Off Party at The Belmont. It’s the perfect time for newcomers to learn about the league and register for the upcoming season.
Membership costs $50.00 for entry in the six week competitive season, a PongRock t-shirt, Belmont drink specials, entry into the weekly contests and prizes, and the chance to win your own ping pong table as well as the crown of PongRock Champion.
Do you think you’ve got what it takes to hang with the big boys and girls of PongRock? Registration is still open until the first ball is hit on the first night of the season. So warm up your paddles, y’all, because the balls are gonna start flying.
