Local shop is selling an Austinite's 'drunk hipster soul' on eBay
Depending on how you look at it, this is either the steal of the century or a most ridiculous PR stunt. Either way, an eBay post is making the Reddit rounds today offering up one "drunk hipster's soul."
The auction is being hosted by Whatever Kitsch & Smokes (7101 Texas 71), a local shop that sells smoking accessories and gift items. The soul, listed as "lightly used, smells faintly of patchouli [and] safely contained in an unused new glass jar" was used as payment on Thursday, July 24 for a small Bic lighter.
"I don't think he cares, he just really needed the lighter," says the smoke shop's owner.
Whatever Kitsch & Smokes owner Rochelle (who asked to be identified by her first name only) insists that it was a very real transaction. "[The customer] was kinda drunk and desperately needed a light and I told him the cheapest lighter was this Bic lighter," she explains. After the "hipster" opened his wallet and found no money, he began to barter.
"[Eventually] he looks at me and says, 'I'll give you my soul for this lighter. I really need [it].'" And so the owner agreed and the customer wrote out on a piece of paper, "my soul for a lighter." Seeing that she was clearly getting the better end of the bargain, Rochelle upgraded the customer's lighter from a $1.29 Bic to a snazzier $2.99 Cheech and Chong-themed model.
And for an opening bid of $2.99 that "drunk hipster's soul" can be yours, complete with a specialty jar. "We've never seen him before, never seen him since," says Rochelle, laughing. "I don't think he cares, he just really needed the lighter."
As of press time, the soul has no bids on eBay. And we all officially live in an episode of Portlandia.
