The Austin Empty Bowl Project (AEBP) is an effort by Austin-area potters to fight hunger. The Sunday before Thanksgiving, AEBP invites the public to select their favorite from thousands of locally crafted ceramic bowls, have it filled with gourmet soup and bread, and listen to live music while enjoying the lunch. The $20 donation goes to Kids Cafe, a program of the Central Texas Food Bank, and Meals for Kids, a program of Meals on Wheels Central Texas. Take the bowl home to remind you that others have empty bowls.
AEBP welcomes bowl donations from potters and pottery students. The bowls must be ceramic, food-safe, glazed bowls that will hold two cups of liquid. Bowls should not have any rough edges or sharp spots. The interior of the bowls should be completely glazed, with no pinholes or crevices that could harbor bacteria. Fill out a donation form here.
For those who are not potters or pottery students, or don't have access to a clay studio but would like to donate a bowl, there are opportunities to hand-decorate a ceramic bowl and have it donated to the event. Head here for more information.
The annual Austin Empty Bowl Project Preview Party is a family-friendly event that include soups, hors d'oeuvres, breads, desserts, beer and wine, door prizes, and an empty bowl. All proceeds benefit the children's programs of the Central Texas Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Central Texas. Tickets are $75 per person.
