Why Austin is one of the best places in America for working women
If you're a woman working in Austin, congratulations — because you're working. In 44 of the 52 largest metros in the country (1 million people or more), unemployment rates for women exceed those for men.
But not in Austin, which comes in third on the list of best job markets for women, according to a study done by Headlight.
Here, the difference between unemployment rates for women (between ages 25 and 64) and men is -0.2 percent. To give you an idea of how great that is, the worst job market in the country for women is Las Vegas, with a difference of 2.4 percent.
Other not-so-great places to be a woman looking for work are Cleveland, Ohio; San Diego, California; Hartford, Connecticut; Jacksonville, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Orlando, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Detroit, Michigan; and Portland, Oregon.
Texas scores high overall, with San Antonio and Dallas also at -0.2 percent — good for fourth and fifth place, respectively. Oklahoma City takes home the first-place title, with a margin of -0.4 percent.
The other cities to round out the top 10 are Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, Georgia; Denver, Colorado; and San Jose, California.
