Austin designer's debut collection promotes girl power with every stitch
Austinite Nicki Patel has created a new ethical fashion line where positivity and empowering women radiates from every stitch. Milo+nicki, named in part for her dog, Milo, is a cruelty-free, ethically designed womenswear line inspired by Indian and Zambian aesthetics and made in the U.S.
The brand’s mission is to empower women to embrace life and conquer fears. Patel's goal for the collection was to "create a line that would allow me to inspire and empower other women to find what set their soul on fire.”
The debut collection is available for preorder on the brand's Kickstarter page. Each garment is handwoven using natural fibers in small-batch style. The collection features six essential pieces with breezy silhouettes in rich blue hues from natural plant-based dyes. Some of Patel’s favorite pieces include the roomy amore maxi, inspired by her mother, and the sassy smother jumpsuit, inspired by her eldest sister’s '70s style.
“The collection is for all women and for any occasion,” Patel says. “The design and fabrics are timeless, classic, and versatile to give you a go-to date night look or relaxed music festival vibe. Our pieces take you from vacay to everyday, just like we like it.”
While the brand is just making its debut into the fashion world, Patel says the milo+nicki vibe fits in seamlessly with the friendly, creative culture of Austin. “With Austin’s beautiful fusion of diversity, culture, and traditions, we have a unique group of women who are independent and bold and a community who cares deeply about our planet and the people who live on it,” Patel says. “This is the perfect place for milo+nicki to call home.”
