Austin's quirkiest pastime named country's top spot to visit in 2015
Forget South Congress, Sixth Street, Barton Springs and all of our music festivals: Chicken Shit Bingo is Austin's pride and joy. CNN has named 15 quirky destinations to visit this year, and amid Cold War relics, hot sauce tours and testicle festivals, you'll also find Chicken Shit Bingo at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon.
For those who haven't played, the concept is simple. Every Sunday at the Little Longhorn, a chicken roams around on a makeshift bingo board. Human participants buy squares and wait for the chicken to deposit its unsavory nugget. The owner of the lucky (or unlucky) square wins.
Part of the beauty of Chicken Shit Bingo, CNN says, is that it demands "very little of your attention." All you have to do is "buy a number and hope that the chicken eats the feed and poops on your square." While you're waiting, enjoy cold brews and Texas tunes (Austin favorite Dale Watson often takes the stage) courtesy of the Little Longhorn. The news network also suggests stopping off at Lucy's Fried Chicken (just up the block) for a post-bingo meal.
Other quirky hot spots around the U.S. include Elvis Presley's birthplace in Mississippi, the site of Tony Soprano's last supper from The Sopranos, and the world's largest truck stop in Iowa.
