Conjoined twins Owen and Emmett Ezell are in stable condition after successful surgery last Saturday at Medical City Children's Hospital in Dallas. Surgeons waited about a month to separate the infant brothers, who were born July 15 and joined from breast bone to belly button.
Among other health concerns, the babies were born with a birth defect called an omphalocele, meaning their intestines were outside of their bodies, covered only by a thin layer of tissue. Before being separated, the boys shared a liver and bowels.
At birth, Owen and Emmett weighed a combined 11 pounds, 15 ounces. They spent six weeks in Medical City's Level 4 NICU, and prior to Saturday's surgery, the boys weighed more than 16 pounds.
Parents Dave and Jenni Ezell are scheduled to speak about the miraculous surgery at 1:30 pm today. We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
