Blanton Museum's 2019 gala delivers beautiful surprise to Austin art world
What: The Blanton Museum of Art 2019 Gala
Where: The Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin
The lowdown: On February 9, Austin A-listers, UT bigwigs, and international art patrons gathered on the university's grounds in honor of the Blanton Museum of Art. This year, under the shadow of Ellsworth Kelly's Austin and with a crystal clear view of the Texas State Capitol, guests mixed and mingled — and raised $800,000 in support of the artful institution.
At any other event, the raising of $800,000 would be the big news, but UT President Gregory Fenves, Blanton Director Simone Wicha, and Elle Moody of the Moody Foundation had an even bigger surprise. The Moody Foundation, it was announced, has earmarked $20 million for the Blanton — the largest gift ever awarded to a member of Austin's fine arts community.
Following the news, local luminaries perused the Blanton's newest exhibition, "Words/Matter: Latin American Art and Language at the Blanton," before gathering in the courtyard — the same courtyard that will be transformed thanks to the Moody Foundation. Under a clear tent decorated in dramatic red florals by Flora Feteish and design elements created by Austin-based Frank & Victor, guests dined on an exquisite dinner from chef Elmar Prambs of the Four Seasons Austin.
