CultureMap Auto Awards

Crossover Utility Vehicle of the Year: Roomy 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe is a winner

Nic Phillips
Jan 7, 2014 | 1:22 pm

Editor's note: In the second annual CultureMap Auto Awards, our automotive correspondents Nic Philllps and Kevin McCauley bestow honors in 10 categories for the top cars and trucks of 2013/2014. Next up:

Crossover Utility Vehicle of the Year:2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

We were big fans of Hyundai's all-new Santa Fe Sport last year, awarding it runner-up in this category. This year Hyundai brought us the longer wheelbase, "full-size Santa Fe," and bigger proves to be better in crossovers.

Not that Santa Fe is huge; it's less than 10 inches longer than the Sport, but we think it's sized right, with three rows of seating and a spacious, airy interior that, at 160.0 cubic feet, is one of the largest interior volumes in its class.

The Santa Fe is sized right, with three rows of seating and a spacious, airy interior that is one of the largest interior volumes in its class.

The Santa Fe is handsomely styled inside and out, successfully bridging the gap between bland economy people movers and far more expensive luxury options without giving up too much. Available are a panoramic power glass roof, proximity smart key access, Hyundai blueLink telematics, heated and cooled leather seats in four tasteful colors, and a choice of a 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat or captain's chairs for the second-row seating.

Even base models come well-equipped with heated cloth seats trimmed in innovative YES Essentials®, stain-resistant, anti-static fabric; color audio display; and rearview camera.

Also new is a standard 3.3L V-6 engine with direct fuel injection that gives it a class-leading 290 horsepower. Mated to a smooth-shifting, 6-speed automatic, it's EPA rated to 25 mpg highway. That fuel economy is mid-pack in the segment, but weighing some 400 pounds less than its competitors, the Santa Fe drives more nimbly with less heft to shift about.

Starting just under $30,000 and backed by a 5-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, Santa Fe is a clear value winner.

CUV of the Year Runner-up: 2014 FIAT 500L

In keeping with the bigger-but-not-too-much-bigger theme, our runner-up in the crossover utility category isn't really a crossover at all. Or is it?

The 500L is FIAT's answer to a larger, more passenger- and stuff-friendly version of the stylish super-sub-compact 500, and it's an interesting package. Outside it's nearly two feet longer than the 500 but remains short overall, more than 10 inches shorter than a Toyota RAV4 or Ford Escape CUV.

Yet inside the 500L is a 100-cubic-foot cavern slotting right between the conventional RAV's 101 and Escape's 98 cubic-feet volumes.

It's shape may look a little funny, but we chalk that up to the "Italian Cinquecento charm" of the 500. It's a breath of fresh air in a generally boring box utility vehicle space.

Driving the 500L is equally unique, with all models getting the growly 1.4L MultiAir turbo 4-cylinder engine from the 500 Abarth hot hatch and a 6-speed manual option. Although top heavy, it's about driving character that is, well, fun! There are four trims, with the "Trekking" model taking on a more utilitarian outfitting befitting its boxy profile.

Pricing starts at just $19,995; in the mid-$20s, you get all the options. Also consider that EPA estimates fuel economy at 25 mpg city/33 highway, easily besting more conventional CUV's.

Available are second-row captain's chairs for a luxurious configuration for six passengers that also provides easy access to the third row.

Comedy Comeback

Austin's legendary Cap City Comedy Club brings back the laughs with new location

Cap City Comedy Club is coming back, better than ever.

After closing its doors in March 2020 thanks to — you guessed it — pandemic woes, one of Austin's legendary comedy clubs is back, baby, and in a brand new location.
Previously located on Research Boulevard, Cap City Comedy Club served Austin with laughs for over three decades before shuttering. Here's hoping its new outpost at the Domain will revive that legacy for years to come.
In an earlier announcement on its website, the club shared its goal to "continue our tradition of booking national acts, Austin-based comedians, and cutting-edge up-and-comers" at the new location.

Putting the "better than ever" in the classic comeback story, the new spot is bigger than before. Featuring two showrooms for standup shows, one will be for national touring acts, while the other will showcase Austin’s local comedians to help foster the city's growing comedy scene.

The announcement also mentions "eclectic" food and beverage menus and a "jam-packed schedule of local and original programming." "We are excited to welcome you to our new location for more laughs this Winter," says the club.

Comedy fans can find the new club next to the Museum of Ice Cream behind Kendra Scott. Cap City Comedy will be open Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm; Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 9 pm; and Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm. The best parking will be in the Domain's pink garage, with a map available here.

David Bowie career retrospective lands at Austin art gallery with rare prints

Bowie's endlessly changing looks continue to inspire, thanks in part to archival images from cover shoots.

As Austinites explore hundreds of studios on the Austin Studio Tour, the Starman peers out from behind glass. Modern Rocks, a gallery featuring rock and roll photographs and very often organizing rare collections, opens a new David Bowie exhibition on Friday, November 11, as part of the tour. The collection will display prints from across Bowie’s career, known for its many pivots and distinct phases.

The images in this collection are equally valuable to a music fan and a fashion devotee. Some of the prints in “David Bowie: Starman,” curated by gallery owner Steven Walker, are album covers, well-known but obtained directly from the original photographers as an alternative to hanging a record sleeve on the wall.

To honor the shapeshifter and get visitors involved beyond a quick peek inside, Modern Rocks has declared a costume contest. Tim Palmer, the record producer who collaborated with Bowie himself on “Tin Machine” (the eponymous debut for the band Bowie founded and fronted in 1988), will host and judge the contest. His pick will determine which impersonator or vision expander brings home a framed Aladdin Sane print. The runner up will take home a copy of David Bowie Icon, a comprehensive photography book documenting the artist’s entire career.

Contest onlookers and tour visitors are invited for themed cocktails by distillery consultant Mark Shilling. The exhibition can be viewed through the end of 2022, when it will relocate to the David Bowie World Fan Convention in New York City.

Bowie was always interesting to look at, to put it mildly. As a teenager, he repped long hair and an otherwise sharp presentation in a TV interview with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men. He went through a few iconic mullets, an outward fascination with fascist design elements, and a whole lot of rouge.

Other shots from cover sessions appear alongside the more famous images in the exhibition, including limited edition, signed prints from the cover shoot for “Diamond Dogs” by Terry O’Neill (Bowie dressed foppishly, yet working class); “Pin-Ups” by Justin De Villeneuve (Bowie with culture-shifting model Twiggy); and “Heroes” by Masayoshi Sukita (Bowie incredibly coiffed and austerely incredulous). Also included are Brian Duffy’s “Aladdin Sane” and “Scary Monsters” shoots — the former so iconic it became the visual shorthand for anything Bowie — plus early prints from Alec Byrne, Brian Aris, Kevin Cummins, Jake Chessum, Markus Klinko, and more.

The opening reception for “David Bowie: Starman” takes place on November 11, from 7-10 pm. RSVP on Eventbrite. More information about the Austin Studio Tour, including an interactive map, is available at austinstudiotour.org.

Austin's Blanton Museum of Art names new director of public programs ahead of major redesign

Kenyon Adams is the new director of public programs at the Blanton Museum of Art.

As the Blanton Museum of Art prepares to reveal its comprehensive redesign next spring, the museum at the University of Texas at Austin has announced a new director of public programs, Kenyon Adams.

A Senior Fellow at the Hannah Arendt Center at Bard College and Resident Artist at Texas Performing Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, Adams moved to Austin from Brooklyn in 2021. Among numerous accolades, he previously served as strategic development advisor to Fusebox Festival and as founding director of the Arts Initiative at Grace Farms and the SANAA-designed River Building in New Canaan, Connecticut. There, he developed and led public arts programming for an award-winning international institution that welcomed a variety of audiences.

“We are delighted to welcome Kenyon Adams to the Blanton,” said Blanton director Simone Wicha in a release. “He brings a wealth of experience in the arts and a proven track record of success in visionary public programming. Our new grounds have been designed to open the museum into the city, inviting people in to experience creativity and community throughout. I’m confident Kenyon will help us create programs that make the most of these beautiful new spaces, our collections, and our exhibitions—ensuring the Blanton is a vibrant and beloved destination.”

According to the release, Adams will lead the Blanton’s public programming in this new role with a goal to further strengthen the museum’s presence among its audiences here in Central Texas and beyond. The lineup will pair with the museum's already-popular events series such as Curated Conversations and SoundSpace while also inaugurating the outdoor performance spaces on the new Moody Patio. Currently under construction with a projected completion date of spring 2023, the patio will become a centerpiece of the Blanton’s revitalized grounds.

“I’m thrilled to join the Blanton during this transformational stage and lead its public programming in a reimagined space,” said Adams in the release. “The unique potential of public programs is the opportunity to activate spaces in ways that connect audiences, mission, and institutional memory. I greatly look forward to working with the team to further engage Austin’s diverse communities.”
