New From Dusk Till Dawn series photos leave more questions than answers
Filmed here in Austin, and premiering as the first scripted original series to air on Robert Rodriguez's brand new El Rey Network, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is set to go live with its one-hour premiere on March 11, at 8 pm. As for this adaption of the cult film hit from 1996, it's still unclear exactly what the small-screen version of From Dusk Till Dawn will deliver.
Two new images do give a glimpse of the major characters on the series: the violent, bank-robbing Gecko brothers and the deadly seductress Santanico Pandemonium.
D.J. Cotrona will fill in for the role of Seth Gecko, the calm leader of the bank-robbing duo (played by George Clooney in the film). Zane Holtz plays the more unpredictable brother, Richie, originally played by Quentin Tarantino, who also wrote the movie screenplay. Fans also get a peek at Eiza Gonzalez in the role of Santanico Pandemonium, in which Salma Hayek found earlier success.
The release of the teaser photos comes the same week that it was announced that the original film would receive the Star of Texas Award at the upcoming Texas Film Awards, with director Robert Rodriguez accepting the award in person. That makes it the perfect time to reflect on the legacy of the much-beloved cult classic and to muse about how the secretive series will shape up.

So far, it’s been said that while the show includes almost all of the major characters from the film, new characters will also be introduced and the series will further explore the background of the Mesoamerican mythology only hinted at in the movie
But it’s still interesting to consider what the series’ story arc will look like. In the film, the Gecko brothers are on the run from the law before taking a traveling family hostage and winding up at a strip club inhabited by vampires. (If you haven’t seen the film, this "snow day" is your perfect chance.) So will the series try to fill in a ton of gaps in the plot with various flashbacks — à la Lost — about what set the Gecko’s on their destructive path? And what about the history of the vampire-infested Titty Twister strip club?
It will basically be the opposite problem faced by HBO’s Game of Thrones, which has to cut out a vast majority of material from the original book series. Although if From Dusk Till Dawn did air on HBO, all 10 episodes would probably take place at the strip club, allowing for the maximum number of topless women able to appear on camera. Zing!
And while actors such as Cotrona, Holtz and Gonzalez have some big shoes to fill, it will be interesting to see what new characters appear in the series and who is cut. It doesn’t appear that we’ll get to see the badass characters Sex Machine and Frost from the movie. That being said, Rodriguez did recreate a Big Kahuna Burger, so perhaps we can get a cameo by Samuel L. Jackson reprising his Pulp Fiction role.
With fans online and obsessively discussing every photo and press release, it's tough to separate the fact from the speculation. But it’s still exciting to wonder about the possibilities of the series, especially one made right in our town.
