Pecan Street Spring Festival
Twice a year, Sixth Street is transformed from its normal “Dirty Sixth” persona to an open-air art gallery celebrating local arts and crafts with some music and food thrown in. It might be the only time of the year when you can bring your kids to Sixth without having to deal with some awkward explanations afterwards.

Just about every form of arts and crafts are on display here, including painting, sculptures, jewelry, apparel, candles, games and so much more. It’s basically like Etsy, except with barbecue, tacos and basic human interaction.

Free Comic Book Day
This year’s Free Comic Book Day just so happens to coincide with the weekend release of Iron Man 3 and falls directly on May the Fourth, a day that celebrates a certain beloved sci-fi fantasy franchise. It’s a big weekend for nerds already, and free comic books only sweetens the deal.

That’s basically the gist of Free Comic Book Day. Fans wait in line at their favorite independent comic book shops and get some free comic books. It’s how the industry celebrates the local shops that have played an important part in millions of fans’ lives. Some stores even feature signings with comic artists and writers, such as Steve Niles and Matthew Sturges at Austin Books and Comics, or Ernie Cline and his Delorean at Dragon’s Lair.

Hill Country Film Festival
The hustle and bustle of city life can be overwhelming, but even when you leave the city you can still experience a little bit of art and culture from around the world. Luckily for film buffs, the picturesque town of Fredericksburg would like to willkommen you to the Hill Country Film Festival.

Featuring independent artists and filmmakers from the Lone Star State and from around the globe, this weekend festival combines screenings of feature and short subjects with Q&As, discussion panels, happy hours and parties. This local celebration of film and art mixed with the beauty of the surrounding country might make Fredericksburg known for more than its peaches.

Austin Bakes for West
The community of West, Texas is still picking up the pieces from the devastating fertilizer plant explosion, and there’s a long road to recovery for rebuilding nearly and entire town.

West holds a special place in the hearts of anyone who has made the drive from Austin to Dallas-Fort Worth, so local businesses, food bloggers and bakers want to lend a helping hand to the town that has graced our long drives with delicious kolaches. This collective of bake sales at eight locations across the city will benefit AmeriCares, a nonprofit providing support to agencies working on the ground in West.
