Plant Power
Build your own dream crown: Get hands on with mystical herbs & go home with a new headpiece
Having trouble sleeping? There's an herb for that.
On Saturday, Sound & True and Botanicals Folklorica will co-host a "Dream Crown Workshop" where crafters will get hands-on with native local plants, as well as the aromatic mugwort and rosemary species, specifically known for enhancing sleep and clarity of dreams.
After a few hours of instruction, attendees will go home with their very own herbal headpiece, something that has a longstanding history of being hung above the bed or on the wall — not dissimilar to a dreamcatcher — to promote wellness.
Hostesses Mary Kathryn Paynter and Tamara Becerra Valdez each bring distinct knowledge to the table: As a florist and owner of minimalist home and garden shop Sound & True, Paynter will teach the group how to construct and arrange the crown, while Valdez of Botanicals Folklorica will share her vast knowledge of natural medicine and shed light on the power of herbalism.
While the workshop will feel more like a fun gathering of friends than a structured class, Paynter and Valdez explain that the impetus for this event was indeed born out of a desire to educate.
"The workshop is a beautiful example of empowering people to create their own medicine and launches an idea of, 'What does medicine really look like?'" says Valdez.
"As a floral designer, working in the industry of plants has shown me a world that is massively counter-productive to what is actually beneficial for the natural environment," adds Paynter. "We're hoping to elevate a love of flowers into a wonder for plants and their incredible capabilities, and do so in a way that is intentionally beneficial to the greater good of our community."
Those interested in participating can reserve a spot up until noon on Saturday. To attend, drop a line to hello@soundandtrue.com. Better yet, the duo welcomes you to just show up... well-rested, or not.
